The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
