New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
