Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
