Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
